Chapter Four

The phone rang, and Kate's eyes shot open. It was Paul, the bartender at the hotel.

"You coming in tonight or what?" he grumbled.

Kate blinked and sat up on the rumpled sheets. "What time is it?"

"Eight thirty!" Paul said. "That software convention is in town, and I'm busier than a one-legged man in an ass-kicking contest here!"

"Sorry, Paul, I fell asleep."

The voice on the other end of the line snorted in disgust. "Whole town full of actresses, when all we need is waitresses. Just get your ass down here, alright?"

Kate felt a sinking sensation in her gut. "Paul, I'm downtown, it's going to take me an hour."

She heard him hit something and curse. "Hell, this rush will be over by then. Forget it, but you owe me, Kate! I need you on the clock Friday and Saturday."

Kate groaned. Those nights were usually dead at the hotel bar; all the business travelers had left. Still, she felt bad about leaving Paul in the lurch. "I'll be there," she said, then hung up.

Her phone rang again immediately. It was Marco.

"You'll be where?"

"Work," she told him. "I overslept."

"You had a busy afternoon," Marco said, laughing, but Kate thought she heard an edge to his voice. A tinge of jealousy, perhaps? "Tell me what you learned from having Zipper see you nude."

"That men act like dogs when you dangle raw meat in front of them," Kate said.

"Surely you already knew that," Marco said. "What did you learn about yourself?"

Kate thought for a moment. "That I don't know myself," she admitted. "I never thought I could do what I just did."

"But you liked it, didn't you?"

"Yes."

"Remember this, Kate. For a good actress, it doesn't matter what she wants. Sometimes she has to put aside her own desires and become the part she's playing."

Kate stayed quiet, mulling over Marco's words. She thought of all the failed auditions where she'd carried her own mental baggage in with her. She hadn't done that with Zipper; she had been so absorbed with making Marco jealous that she'd forgotten her own desires until he had left.

"When do you work next, Kate?" Marco said.

"Friday night," she said.

"Four days." That should be enough time for those love bites on your neck to fade. Relax until Friday, then."

"Can I audition for parts this week?"

"You're not ready yet," Marco said. "Take it easy for a while, maybe take that snazzy car I loaned you out for a spin. But tell no one of our arrangement."
